Petty Phase – Riot Grrrl all the way! πŸ’ͺ

We love turning not only our issues but global issues into songs & shouting them in everyone’s face.

We caught up with Rosie, Jenny, Alyx & Justin of Petty Phase.

πŸ’– What’s Petty Phase all about & where did the name come from?

It’s about making as much noise & having as much fun playing our music as possible.

We’ve been talking about how we came up with the name. We can’t remember exactly how it came to be on the short list but we liked it because it was ironic. We’ve been playing for nearly 5 years so it hasn’t turned out to be a phase at all! Maybe just a little petty…

πŸ’– What best describes you as a band?

A rowdy four piece, you’ll hear us before you see us (on stage or off).

πŸ’– What inspires you to play music?

We love turning not only our issues but global issues into songs & shouting them in everyone’s face.

πŸ’– Who are your main influences in music/life?

Collectively we have an eclectic range of influences.

We love some of the bands that came out of the 90s Grunge & Riotgrrrl movements, which is pretty obvious in our style.

We also love bands like The Velvet Underground, The Stooges & The Ramones. But we’ve been known to chuck in the odd Scissor Sisters or Gwen Stefani cover into our set!

πŸ’– On your Instagram it says – Tank Girl. Riot Grrrl. Spice Girl. How do you see those as interrelated? And if you had to choose one . . .

Riot Grrrl alllllll the way!

πŸ’– When you’re not dong band stuff what do you get up to?

Rosie (guitar/vocals) works as a guitar teacher & is about to study a degree in Psychology & Sociology. She’s really into oriental art & culture & is teaching herself to speak Japanese. She makes some really cool paintings when she has time & sometimes sells them.

Jenny (guitar/vocals) Jen works as a hairdresser & barber, meeting all of your colourful needs. Also enjoying the occasional gin or 12. Jen also likes to write solo songs & collaborate with local musicians.

Alyx (bass) dabbles in acting. Most recently she played Kayla in Life After (an independent film that explores the effects of suicide). She hosts ALYX PLAYS PUNK on Ray Independent Radio, she plays classic punk tracks & hordes of new bands. Link below!

Justin (drums) is a football hooligan but only when in a 10 feet radius of Roots Hall.  He plays drum sessions for some other acts around Southend when not guzzling oat milk.  His most recent endeavour is to learn the Nadaswaram.

πŸ’– What does feminism mean to you?

To us, Feminism means equality no matter how you identify.  In regards to our music, equality is a big topic for us. A lot of our songs are about social issues, particularly issues facing women.

πŸ’– What one word best describes you as a band?

πŸ’– Where the hell can we find you?

Our music is available to stream on most streaming platforms but here is a link to our Spotify.

Lori on Petty Phase: The love children of Debbie Harry & Brody Dalle, if Tsunami Bomb & Bad Cop Bad Cop set up their own Riot Grrrl chapter you’d have Petty Phase. With just the right amount of leopard print, angst & energy Petty Phase ensure us that it’s different for girls. And in this instance – we’re fucking glad it is. 5 thousands flame emojis for this bunch of badasses πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯
