We caught up with Lauren, Amelia & Geen, of Girls Like Us.
💖 What’s Girls Like Us all about & where did the name come from?
‘Girls Like Us’ is actually a song by The Julie Ruin. Lauren came forward with it & it just kinda stuck. Our band is all about having fun & making a noise.
💖 What best describes you as a band?
To describe our band we would say it’s a mixture between feminist noise & fuzz with angry undertones towards society.
💖 What inspires you to play music?
We’re inspired to make music as an outlet for anger, to vent & rant. Having somewhere to shout & make as much noise as possible is a release.
💖 Who are your main influences in music/life?
Our main influences are bands from the riotgrrrl movement. Bands like L7, Babes in Toyland, The Slits, Bikini Kill, etc., etc. There are also a lot of 90s grunge bands like Alice in Chains, Mad Season & Nirvana that we love.
💖 On your Instagram it says – ‘the noise your cat makes when she’s on heat’. How do you channel that feline energy into your music & shows?
We wrote it because we thought it was funny, & also cause we’re all angry hormonal women.
💖 When you’re not doing band stuff what do you get up to?
Lauren actually works in film sound & has recently worked on “Ammonite” which is out 2020. Amelia puts on events under ‘Cigarette Pie’ & Geen does sound engineering for live events. So we’re all pretty geared towards audio 24/7.
💖 What one word best describes you as a band?
💖 What’s next for you guys?
We have a few gigs lined up, we play Kingston on 27th September , then Canterbury on November 24th. We also just finished recording our live session which will be ready for release soon. We also will be playing a few acoustic sets after summer.
Lori on Girls Like Us : Girls Like Us are cute AF. Get over it 💖💖💖💖
