💖 What inspires you to play music?
Deep emotions & needing to process things which I’m battling with.
💖 What’s your writing process?
I’m so solitary when I write. Very occasionally something just comes streaming out – generally if I’ve got some emotion that I haven’t been expressing haha, but more often that not I go round & round & round in circles changing one tiny bit at a time until it’s ready … & that is best done alone.
💖When you’re not doing band stuff what do you get up to?
I’m working most hours but I’ve been doing a lot of surfing & painting this year – & helping out at a really lovely community centre near where I’ve been staying. I’m not much of a cook but I like to eat 🙂
💖 What does feminism mean to you? / What 1 thing could everyone be doing to make the scene a better place?
To me being a feminist is about equal rights, & equal opportunities. It’s a no brainer … & I can’t quite understand why it still isn’t obvious everyone should be one.
I guess a lot of people don’t question their biases & those entrenched in the world around them – so I think that would help a lot – just for people to sit down & try & understand where they might not be noticing policies or actions that impact people badly.
💖 We’ve heard you went through a period of self-imposed isolation to write this EP. What was the decision making process behind that? How did it feel? & did you encounter any struggles with it?
I was really sick of London & had had a real intense end of year with my first album coming out at the end of 2018. So I felt like it was time to try something different.
I love retreating pretty much always, so was sooooo looking forward to it. In the end it was probably a bit too isolated for a while – but that makes socialising even sweeter afterwards 🙂
💖 What do you think inspires people to withdraw for a while? How can people do it healthily?
I think it depends on the person, but it’s definitely good for my state of mind. I’d say – just be a bit sensible about it – let people know it’s what you’re doing, & that you’ll be back when you’re ready.
💖 I often feel as though I want to be completely alone but with constant attention. Is that something you find? How do you think we can best maintain connection with others in a social media driven generation?
I guess if no one’s checking up on you that can feel sad, but I think with social media & the modern world it’s so hard to get to a place of actual real isolation that it’s worth doing.
For me I find I have way more time for people if I’ve spent time alone.
💖 What do you advise for others who want to undertake home recording? Do you feel that home recordings provide a more intimate feel to your music?
I think the freedom to experiment that comes with the fact that it’s cheaper & easier to record at home helps with making sure the sound is your own.
& I guess yes – the more comfortable you feel potentially the more intimate the music will feel – these songs are particularly bare all – so will have to see how the next record turns out! 🙂
💖 Tell us about your next release what’s the feeling to it/what’s it about?
This next release ‘Sept~Dec’ is about friendship & sex & trying to be closer to people. I spent a lot of this year quite isolated & I guess it was natural that by the end of it I feel like reaching out 🙂
💖 What’s next for you? (please include links to where we can listen to you)
I’m on tour & then recording my next album over the next few months 🙂 Stay up to date at www.elizashaddad.com!
💖 Dates for any upcoming shows?
SO many! I’m currently on tour around Europe with Keane, & then we start our own UK tour on the 9th March- finishing up at SCALA on the 19th March which I’m so stoked for! 🙂

Lori on Eliza: Eliza has a deep but delicate sound bringing an inexplicably serene form of angst to the music scene. If Tori Amos had a heavy weekend you’d probably get Eliza. Despite her deep emotions & self imposed isolation, Eliza appears an incredibly uplifting & light spirited musician. The latest release is definitely inspiration for introspection.
