Eliza Shaddad – on self imposed isolation, deep emotions & community ๐Ÿ’œ

To me being a feminist is about equal rights, & equal opportunities. Itโ€™s a no brainer … & I canโ€™t quite understand why it still isnโ€™t obvious everyone should be one.

๐Ÿ’– What inspires you to play music?

Deep emotions & needing to process things which Iโ€™m battling with.

๐Ÿ’– Whatโ€™s your writing process?

Iโ€™m so solitary when I write. Very occasionally something just comes streaming out – generally if Iโ€™ve got some emotion that I havenโ€™t been expressing haha, but more often that not I go round & round & round in circles changing one tiny bit at a time until itโ€™s ready โ€ฆ & that is best done alone.

๐Ÿ’–When you’re not doing band stuff what do you get up to?

Iโ€™m working most hours but Iโ€™ve been doing a lot of surfing & painting this year – & helping out at a really lovely community centre near where Iโ€™ve been staying. Iโ€™m not much of a cook but I like to eat ๐Ÿ™‚

๐Ÿ’– What does feminism mean to you? / What 1 thing could everyone be doing to make the scene a better place?

To me being a feminist is about equal rights, & equal opportunities.  Itโ€™s a no brainer … & I canโ€™t quite understand why it still isnโ€™t obvious everyone should be one.

I guess a lot of people donโ€™t question their biases & those entrenched in the world around them – so I think that would help a lot – just for people to sit down & try & understand where they might not be noticing policies or actions that impact people badly.

๐Ÿ’– Weโ€™ve heard you went through a period of self-imposed isolation to write this EP. What was the decision making process behind that? How did it feel? & did you encounter any struggles with it?

I was really sick of London & had had a real intense end of year with my first album coming out at the end of 2018. So I felt like it was time to try something different.

I love retreating pretty much always, so was sooooo looking forward to it. In the end it was probably a bit too isolated for a while – but that makes socialising even sweeter afterwards ๐Ÿ™‚

๐Ÿ’– What do you think inspires people to withdraw for a while? How can people do it healthily?

I think it depends on the person, but itโ€™s definitely good for my state of mind. Iโ€™d say – just be a bit sensible about it – let people know itโ€™s what youโ€™re doing, & that youโ€™ll be back when youโ€™re ready.

๐Ÿ’– I often feel as though I want to be completely alone but with constant attention. Is that something you find? How do you think we can best maintain connection with others in a social media driven generation?

I guess if no oneโ€™s checking up on you that can feel sad, but I think with social media & the modern world itโ€™s so hard to get to a place of actual real isolation that itโ€™s worth doing.

For me I find I have way more time for people if Iโ€™ve spent time alone.

๐Ÿ’– What do you advise for others who want to undertake home recording? Do you feel that home recordings provide a more intimate feel to your music?

I think the freedom to experiment that comes with the fact that itโ€™s cheaper & easier to record at home helps with making sure the sound is your own.

& I guess yes – the more comfortable you feel potentially the more intimate the music will feel – these songs are particularly bare all – so will have to see how the next record turns out! ๐Ÿ™‚

๐Ÿ’– Tell us about your next release what’s the feeling to it/what’s it about?

This next release โ€˜Sept~Decโ€™ is about friendship & sex & trying to be closer to people. I spent a lot of this year quite isolated & I guess it was natural that by the end of it I feel like reaching out ๐Ÿ™‚

๐Ÿ’– What’s next for you? (please include links to where we can listen to you)

Iโ€™m on tour & then recording my next album over the next few months ๐Ÿ™‚ Stay up to date at www.elizashaddad.com!

๐Ÿ’– Dates for any upcoming shows?

SO many! Iโ€™m currently on tour around Europe with Keane, & then we start our own UK tour on the 9th March- finishing up at SCALA on the 19th March which Iโ€™m so stoked for! ๐Ÿ™‚

๐Ÿ’–Links to any social media ๐Ÿ™‚

Lori on Eliza: Eliza has a deep but delicate sound bringing an inexplicably serene form of angst to the music scene. If Tori Amos had a heavy weekend you’d probably get Eliza. Despite her deep emotions & self imposed isolation, Eliza appears an incredibly uplifting & light spirited musician. The latest release is definitely inspiration for introspection.
