Bitch Hunt talk collabs, First Timers, & badass bitches 🐩

People make mistakes & hurt each other. It’s a part of being people. We don’t believe in punitive behaviour towards people who make mistakes, but it’s important to learn & listen, too.

💖 What’s Bitch Hunt about?/ Where did the name come from/How did you set up?

We already knew each other, mainly through Roller Derby. Our bassist Sophia posted on their social media about wanting to do First Timers fest & the rest of us commented that we were up for it. First Timers is an annual series of workshops that ends in a festival where every band plays its first show.

90% of the reason we’re called Bitch Hunt is because we love dogs. Also, misogynists call women/queers/femmes ‘bitches’ when we don’t do what they want. How many times have you been called a bitch for being strong? Bitch is a great word.

💖 What inspires you to play music?

Sian: I write about my Feelings

Rosie: I actually find being inspired very difficult. I’ve always wanted to make music but never completed anything until Bitch Hunt. Playing in a group has helped because I don’t have to bring the energy on my own & we inspire each other.

Sophia: From a young age, I played music from a desire to not feel alone. Music is powerful & there’s community around it. Listening & playing feels like the closest thing to a hug to my heart & my brain & when I play I feel this energy envelop me like a superpower. I was a super lonely kid with anxiety & depression from pre-teens on, so having that positive stability & good vibes was life-changing.

Erin: I’m inspired to play music by my wonderful bandmates. Growing up I got told I was a bit crap at musical stuff but they give me the confidence to express myself!

💖 What’s your writing process?

Sometimes songs come together in rehearsal studios. Sometimes we each do some writing at home & bring it to rehearsal. Sometimes we start with a riff, sometimes a melody. There’s no right way to write.

💖 Who are your main influences in music/life?

Sian: Kim Deal in music, my mum in life.

Sophia: My dad is a major influence. He’s musical too – he was in a touring band in Trinidad as a drummer & must have seen something in me because he started me in classical guitar lessons when I was 6. Musically my influences are grunge-based. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden & then onto QOTSA & Foo Fighters. The band is probably sick of the amount of times I fangirl over Dave Grohl tbh but I love how they build great tunes.

Rosie: When I was a kid my mum used to play Beatles songs on piano & I’d sing along. I played a lot of Red Hot Chili Pepper riffs when I was a teen & loved My Chemical Romance & Radiohead. But I listened to loads of different kinds of music, i.e., I’d get ‘World music’ CDs for Xmas. A few influences for writing guitar/s in Bitch Hunt at the moment are Joan Armatrading, Slothrust & The Thermals.

Erin: One of my main influences in music is Jodi from BYENARY/Colour Me Wednesday. They are so talented & I am especially inspired by their stage presence & how fun & playful they can be. It makes me want to play drums.

💖 How did your amaze collab with adults come about?

adults were one of our first friend bands. Sian & Tom worked at the same pub, we played together there, & we just liked each other & each other’s music! We knew we wanted to release something together one day, & we happened to each have a few tracks ready at the same time.

We asked For the Sake of Tapes to do it as a split & they were so great to work with – Healey from the label did the artwork – our title tracks were Spaceman & armadillo so it’s an armadillo in space with an Anarchist patch waving a trans flag & it is Very Very Good.

💖 When you’re not doing band stuff, what do you get up to?

Sian is a postie who does Jewish stuff & helps organise First Timers Fest. Rosie studies, gardens, & makes lots of different things. Sophia organises Sci-Fi events under SOPHFIFEST.com (so-fi-fest) & writes cute solo stuff under B.B. Chee. Erin lives on a boat & is interested in off-grid electrical solutions & sustainability. They study anthropology & are a medical doctor – they were at A&E throughout the pandemic & we are really proud of them. You can clap for them at our next show lol.

💖 What one thing could everyone be doing to make the scene a better place?

I don’t know if this counts as one thing but lift each other up! Boost bands with marginalised members by coming to shows, watching live streams, listening,  buying music, & buying merch. Watch the support acts & don’t talk loudly in people’s sets. Cheer! Give brand new bands good slots on the bill.

💖 Tell us about Spaceman & 23. What’s the feeling to it/what’s it about?

Spaceman is a bit of fun about men who take up too much space. 23, Sian wrote about their mate, Katie, who passed away a few years ago. They hadn’t seen each other in a while. The message is to reach out to someone you love that you’ve lost touch with, but that’s not so easy in these times. Maybe Zoom them. Do ittttt.

💖 What’s been the best & worst for Bitch Hunt in lockdown?

We’ve been pretty much inactive musically but breaks are healthy. A few of us are key workers & have been really busy. Remember that music is a joy & there’s no pressure to keep things rushing forward ever, but particularly in a global pandemic! Write & gig & record when you want, not because you think you have to. We do really miss each other though, & are looking forward to getting back to writing & playing. & releasing!
