Heart Through Sacrifice – monster fighting, comic book writing & mythical beasts πŸ–€

πŸ’– What’s Heart Through Sacrifice about? / Where did the name come from? / How did you start out?

Heart Through Sacrifice came from a desire & need to do a proper recording.

I’ve played in many bands since being in the UK, all have been great & mostly fun, but I really wanted to do a proper album, have a proper physical copy, work with good people & most importantly enjoy the process!

“The name of this project representsΒ gaining heart through sacrifice, work hard & reap the rewards, the reward in this case being happiness & the pride in doing something good.” @laurenmarchantphotography

πŸ’– What inspires you to play music?

It’s just a natural draw. All my life & where ever I’ve lived in the world, I’ve always had a guitar next to me.

"To have met Corinne Cooper (Heart Through Sacrifice vocals) has been a great blessing as she brings melody & power to the songs, with her voice that has been missing from my music forever! In fact, it was her demo vocals on one of the songs that inspired me to push on & write the rest of the album!" photograph by@laurenmarchantphotography

πŸ’– What’s your writing process: how do you come up with your concepts? It’s so easy to write a song about an ex or about things you’ve experienced, but warriors & mythical beasts are a different kettle of fish!

I love movies, story driven video games & anime! I’ve always wanted to write something & this finally gave me the outlet to do so, although in this situation, I wrote all the music first & in the order of the album . . .

When playing the demo to Matt Bew at Whitehouse Studios in Reading, we both decided that it sounded cinematic & that’s how the scripting & lyric ideas really began to come together.

πŸ’– Who are your main influences in music/life?

Devin Townsend, Anneke van Giersbergen, Machine Head, Lacuna Coil, Killswitch Engage, Katatonia, Alice In Chains . . . & many more!

πŸ’– Quick, you’re faced with a terrifying mythical beast! You reach for your weapon of choice: what is it?

A Japanese Katana!

πŸ’– If you had to team up with two other bands to make the ultimate monster-fighting-ass-kicking-defeating-the-forces-of-evil team, who would they be & why?

Hmmm . . . two other bands to fight monsters?? It’ll have to be Hatebreed & Machine Head because they’re all tough cave-men types, I mean Hatebreed has a song called Destroy Everything & Machine Head have Ten Ton Hammer!!

πŸ’– Do you see HTS expanding beyond music? Are we going to get an epic Game of Thrones style saga of books or an intricate DnD campaign to tie in with the music? (I hear murmurings of a comic book….. tell us more!)

The original plan for HTS is to branch out to a comic book with the cover artist, Bec Dennison of Bullet on a String, but Covid 19 has not only stopped gigs & rehearsals but also inspiration & progress for the graphic novel work which is pretty sad. Fingers crossed we can get this going again . . . .

πŸ’– Can you recommend some of your favourite fellow high-fantasy creatives? Any authors, bands, films or TV shows we should be checking out?

Some of the artistic inspirations for the HTS theme & characters, can be seen in Heavenly Sword (PS3 launch game!), God of War with its Greek mythology. But the idea of the beast comes from older Stephen King novels where the ‘evil’ is ancient, dark, unknown . . . .

I find this to be a theme that runs through a lot of his stories, including IT & Pet Sematary.

I also often recommend people to watch an anime called Claymore, powerful female main characters, half human, half beast . . . it’s pretty brutal!

πŸ’– How has lockdown impacted your writing process & practice schedule?

Lockdown has pulled it to a hard stop, no more rehearsals, no more gigs. But it’s given me time to start writing for volume II.

Since I use mostly software instruments including Neural DSP guitar amplification & Roland V Drums, I can write & record demo’s even in a tiny London flat!

πŸ’– What one thing could everyone be doing to make the scene a better place?

We definitely need to support each other more!

When we started looking to play gigs, we had a lot of problems being too heavy & then not being heavy enough! It seems the mix of metal guitars but clean melodic vocals still has a stigma about it.

πŸ’– When you’re not doing band stuff what do you get up to?

When I’m not doing Heart Through Sacrifice stuff, I’m doing other band stuff!

I play bass for local East London indie band, Emma & the Fragments, & we often play (or played!?) the London circuit including The Finsbury.

Now I’ve started another rock & blues project called Lockdown Co. with Lloyd Meeks who is a great guitarist. We send each other parts by WeTransfer & do all the recording in ‘Lockdown’.

We’re hoping to get some vocals down on this in the near future but for now, it’s just instrumental (if you know any blues loving singers, please let me know!).

πŸ’– Do you have any other projects on the go? (Not necessarily musical!)

Sadly no, my life is music & a day job & that’s it!

πŸ’– What’s next for HTS?

Originally for this year I had planned to play more shows & sell the remaining physical copies of the album. But now I may put it out on digital streaming & then focus on writing the 2nd album.

Our current 5 singles are out on all major streaming platforms:
