Damn Unpretty?

“All it took was a couple of IG stories to have me assured that this zine would speak to me heavily on a feminist level, but what I didnโ€™t expect was the echoes of nostalgia & affirmation that spoke to me on every level of my experience as a woman.”

I first met @georginalangfordbiss at a wedding over a year & a half ago. She introduced me to @grimes & showed me how to download a sparkle cam on my phone and for that I am ever indebted. โœจ

Since then I have admired her incredibly feminine, detailed & meaningful artwork & tattoo style. The delicacy & beauty shared through Georginaโ€™s artwork, fashion style & personal expression is something to be admired & her approach to life is certainly no different.

She recently shared a story of a past life โ€“ one in which she worked tirelessly in journalism, culminating in an unfortunate fallout with MTV where the editor reworked one of her most insightful pieces, belittling her achievements & interest in the music industry to mere fandom. The editor ascribed all of her hard work & musical expertise to merely being โ€˜a girl with a boyfriend in a bandโ€™. Understandably disheartened, angry & upset Georgina made the boss bitch move to quit & not be part of a machine that undermined womenโ€™s achievements & overwrote their history with men โ€“ fuck yeah!

This changed on the 14th of February when Georgina & equally incredible friend Ace launched โ€˜Unprettyโ€™. All it took was a couple of IG stories to have me assured that this zine would speak to me heavily on a feminist level, but what I didnโ€™t expect was the echoes of nostalgia & affirmation that spoke to me on every level of my experience as a woman.

“Unpretty is the zine Courtney Love needed to read when she wrote ‘Live Through This’ & the one we all needed to read when we first started bleaching our hair & exploring our femininity”

This zine is for anyone who identifies as a woman or who feels that an aspect of the female journey has been/would be relevant to them. I left this zine feeling that my body was incredible, that the weirdness I experienced as a teenager was part of a collective journey & that โ€“ whilst we all struggle on the daily to be the people we intend ourselves to be โ€“ our past holds a lot of keys to who we are in the future & taking a loving approach to all aspects of that person is the real key to understanding yourself, loving yourself & using that to make a positive impact on the world.
