Shooting Daggers talk Riot Grrrl, Missandry & Covering the World in Kittens ๐Ÿ’•โš”๏ธ๐Ÿ’•โš”๏ธ๐Ÿ’•โš”๏ธ๐Ÿ’•โš”๏ธ๐Ÿ’•

‘You can do everything yourself & make a difference in your life & other people lives.’

๐Ÿ’– What’s Shooting Daggers about?/ Where did the name come from/How did you set up?

Shooting Daggers is a queer feminist hardcore band formed by three kids from different countries in Europe.

Godinha our drummer is from Portugal/Spain. Bea the bassist is from Italy & Sal, the guitarist/singer is from France.

We find ourselves playing in the UK HC scene now shook & blessed, honestly.

Our name came from the definition of the expression โ€œto shoot daggers at someoneโ€  which is โ€œlooking at one very angrily, spitefully, disdainfullyโ€.

We thought that it represented our energy quite well hahaha.

So this is the way we set the band up: Sal started the project right after she found Bea, bass player, on social media; together then we found our drummer Godinha.

& thatโ€™s when all the fun & love started  ๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿ’– What inspires you to play music?

Bea: Well, the whole idea of being able to create art/express ourselves through music & be heard by others I think is just the whole point, isnโ€™t it?

Godinha: Seeing bands on set & the energy they send to their fans, like Turnstile or FEVER 333.

But also, some specific sounds & music that I listen to from TV series, movies, anime, cartoons, etc. that makes me create a beat or a rhythm.

Sal: It just vibrates in our chests. But Iโ€™d say same as Godinha.

Seeing bands live deffo makes me wanna play music more than ever. & Turnstile is one of the bands that inspires me the most.

๐Ÿ’– Who are your main influences in music/life?

We really feel the need to answer separately to this one because we all three have such different backgrounds. & for us this is what makes us so special.

Sal – Riot Grrrl has been a HUGE influence, on the punk scene in general anyways.

Reading books/watching movies about Riot Grrrl & the US Punk, HxC scene in the late 80โ€™s/ 90โ€™s just showed me that you can go far & huge & be heard – starting from literally nothing but your ideas.

You can do everything yourself & make a difference in your life & other people lives.

If I had to say a name, Iโ€™d say Kathleen Hanna is an influence for me cuz she represents the whole Riot Grrrl movement. Bikini Kill has done a lot for girls in punk.

But I guess my influences change all the time. Tbh my friends are my influences & the things I like in general influence me.

(To be even more honest Flaccid (Godinhaโ€™s other band) is one of my biggest influences atm).

Bea – David Bowie. Full stop.

Such a free soul. He never put limits on himself & his art. He was & still is the most important & best queer icon I look at for my whole creative journey of discovery & self-acceptance.

I am just so blessed to be born in the same century as Bowie.

The bands that influence my music the most are Converge, Touchรฉ Amorรฉ, Gallows, Orchid, Loma Prieta & the classics Husker Du & Iggy Pop & the Stooges ; however, my ultimate source of inspiration are my dear Italian screamo & post-hardcore bands such as Raein, Marnero, ร˜jne, Storm{o}, La Quiete, Fine Before You Came, Shizune, The Death of Anna Karina & the everlasting Skruigners & Nerorgasmo.

Godinha: Musically, there’re a lot of drummers, like Aric Improta, Mark Mironov, Luke Holland, Senri Kawaguchi, Anika Nilles, Julianna Mascia, Jessica Burdeaux, Sarah Thawer & many more.

Then also musicians/bands like 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Nas, Onyx, DMX, Carl Cox, Downlink, Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex, Excision, Chase & Status, Sub Focus, Aversions Crown, Whitechapel, Chelsea Grin, Nasty, Desolated, We Ride, & a large list.

In this list I’m mentioning artists who I’ve been influenced from since my childhood & teenage years.

Also, people who have influenced me in my life are mainly my family, my friends in my previous hometown (Vigo, Spain; especially my former band Turn To Dust) & many parkour athletes worldwide such as Danny Illabaca, Nate Weston, Pedro “Phosky” Leรณn Gรณmez, Camila Stefaniu, Silke Sollfrank, Georgia Munroe, to name a few.

๐Ÿ’– Tell us about your aesthetic

Shooting Daggers: We could say that we try & stay as DIY as possible, taking references from zines, collages, tattoos &, yeah, pretty edgy stuff.

Godinha: I am always mixing up with hip-hop & metal styles, although I’m too broke to define my own one, so I would call my style – a “poor hustler aesthetic”

Sal: Iโ€™m really into psychedelic aesthetics lately – I love colours!

I love traditional tatts, I love cartoons, I love vintage aesthetics, vintage porn photos look mad.

Idk if it reflects on Shooting Daggers visual aesthetic, but if you want precise examples of visuals that I ADORE, go check jessejae, zachgrearart & vintage fantasy on Instagram.

Bea: I am the emo one haah, I just love everything dark & hazy.

Black work tattoos & animal illustrations are my favourites & I am really into Chinese & East Asian art.

๐Ÿ’– When you’re not doing band stuff what do you get up to?

Sal: We go to gigs all together & spend all our money on vegan junk food.

Often Bea & I are having sleepovers, mainly when Iโ€™m having a mental breakdown & I need to cry. (OFTEN).

Otherwise, what I do in my spare time by myself is pretty cool still haha. I’m tryna skate as much as I can so I can keep progressing. Thereโ€™s a super sick girl skate scene in London!

I also spend my time mixing & studying (Iโ€™m doing a producing degree) when Iโ€™m not wasting my time on Instagram. I wanna do too much stuff ๐Ÿ˜‚ I just canโ€™t manage to do all that by myself.

THATโ€™S WHY I NEED A MANAGER.  (KNM edit: managers apply within)

I enjoy listening to Podcasts a lot (Bobo & flex, my all time fav).

I also do zines when I find the motivation & Iโ€™m pretty proud of them! Itโ€™s called Punk & Panties – itโ€™s about Punk, Feminism & Skateboarding (& about myself ofc).

Godinha:  Apart from working & sleeping, I also have a 2nd band called FLACCID. Outside bands, I tend to train parkour as long as possible, but also I try to hangout with friends & do other social activities.

Bea: If I am not at gigs or chilling at the pub, I like going outside London for adventures!

I just try to get good vibes & inspiration by visiting other places, seeing the nature & the animals.

Otherwise you can just find me in my room drawing, reading or watching films/series.

I recently finished my Masters Degree in Chinese & even though Iโ€™m not a student anymore, I still try to learn new things every day.

I am definitely not a sports person like the other two, letโ€™s say I just like to train my brain haha.

๐Ÿ’– What does feminism mean to you? / What 1 thing could everyone be doing to make the scene a better place?

Feminism for us includes an endless number of  big & small fights, which are all important & need to be pursued. However, the link between all of them is learning how to respect human beings.

One thing everyone could do is to just talk to girls in the scene. Behave & have conversations with them the same way you would do with your male friends. & always speak out when something is wrong.

๐Ÿ’– If you werenโ€™t shooting daggers what would you be shooting?

Godinha:  I’d be shooting ni***s down the street (dumb pun! But fyi I can say the n word)

Sal: If I wasnโ€™t Shooting Daggers, I would be shooting from the hip.

Bea: Iโ€™d shoot puppies & kittens – to everyone – for a better world.

๐Ÿ’– What 3 things make you the most hostile?

Sal: Social interactions in general. Iโ€™m what I like to call โ€œShookshyโ€™โ€™ in social situations. (thatโ€™s why I broke the edge recently).

Cis-het-males. (Whoops. cliche??? Perhaps it is.)

Dating someone who has long dirty fingernails (a nightmare, imagine). No thanks, eeew ๐Ÿ’…

Bea: Fascists; Drama; Coriander (All are just fucking everywhere)

Godinha: Discrimination, abuse, people standing in the middle of the pit with beers.

๐Ÿ’– Tell us about the golden rules

  1. Respect the kids
  2. Girls to the pit
  3. Mosh donโ€™t kill
  • Never forget to ask โ€œis it vegan?โ€

๐Ÿ’– If mis(s)andra was a person, what celebrity would she be & why?

Just Sal probably, & she will be a celebrity soon.

But everyone can be a mis(s)andra, really, you just need to share the hate for men.

Sal: PS: For the record, Missandra (from โ€œMisandryโ€™โ€™), is woman who hates men. Iโ€™ve been called one many times & I donโ€™t believe there is such thing as being a missandra. But I think anger & hatred are absolutely normal & healthy reactions to oppression. I have my reasons to hate men & unfairness gives me strength.

๐Ÿ’– What other queercore bands should we be checking out?

G.L.O.S.S.; Dicklord; Space Camp; Homosuperior; Tribe 8; Poisonous Cunt; Livid (in random order).

HIRS Collective, Get Better Records & Hell Hath No Fury Records are also great collectives to check out if you want to find some rare pearls.

Oh & SeeYouSpaceCowboy, WristMeetsRazor of course!

๐Ÿ’– Tell us about your next release what’s the feeling to it/what’s it about?

Our next release will be our single โ€œHumanity Wasteโ€, which will also be part of the Fuzzbrain studio compilation (which is also our beloved rehearsal space)/

Big up to Ben who runs the studio (always with a big smile)

Itโ€™s one of our favourite tracks, the one that we have more fun playing & we really wanna build some hype behind it (maybe with a music videoโ€ฆ.?) Oulala, lets seeee โ€ฆโ€ฆ..
