Sharp Violet – punk rock, ice cream & cats 🍦

In a still sexist society, feminist punk is needed now more than ever. We started this band because we had something to say.

We caught up with Jess, Marie, Jasmine & Liz, of Sharp Violet.

πŸ’– What’s Sharp Violet all about/where did the name come from?

We are an all-female punk band from Lindenhurst, NY & our music is inspired by issues that women face in today’s world.

In a still sexist society, feminist punk is needed now more than ever. We started this band because we had something to say, & didn’t see much female representation in our local scene. We hope to inspire the next person to pick up an instrument or start a band.

We took our name from Violet Sharp, who was the nanny for Charles Lindbergh’s family & a suspect in the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping scandal. Our name is Sharp Violet, not Violet Sharp.

We won’t steal your baby but we’ll steal your heart.

πŸ’– It says on your Instagram that you’re from Long Island, what’s the Riot Grrrl scene like out there?

Right now, the Riot Grrrl scene on Long Island is very small.

Part of the reason we started this band was to meet other riot grrrls & musicians.  Although, there are some female musicians, the bands we play with are usually all guys & we end up being the only females on the bill.

In New York City which is about an hour away from us, the riot grrrl scene is thriving & the bands are more diverse.

πŸ’– What best describes you as a band?

Through Sharp Violet, we became really great friends. Our friendship is a core element of who we are as a band.

If you like punk rock, ice cream & cats then you’ll probably like us.

πŸ’– What inspires you to play music?

We were inspired by the riot grrrl movement in the early 90s. Each member draws inspiration from a variety of genres & styles & brings that to the violet table.

πŸ’– Who are your main influences in music/life?

Here are two each of our favorite bands:
Jess (Guitar) – Green Day & System of a Down
Marie (Bass) – The Beatles & The Strokes
Jasmine (Drums) – AFI & Sick Of It All
Liz (Vocals) – Sleater Kinney & The Distillers

πŸ’– When you’re not doing band stuff what do you get up to?

When we’re not playing music or working at our day jobs, we try to hang out together as much as possible.

We go to local shows, have make your own pizza parties, play with Liz’s cats & have even taken a few weekend trips together.

πŸ’– What does feminism mean to you?

That all human beings are treated equally & with respect.

πŸ’– What one word best describes you as a band?

Fun!

πŸ’– What’s next for you guys?

We’re recording an EP this summer so stay tuned! In the meantime, you can check out our music on Bandcamp or Spotify.

Lori on Sharp Violet: Whether it’s producing cute AF twee anthems or raw New York inspired Riot Rock, Sharp Violet have this thing on lock. Putting the babe back into Riot Babies, these guys are busy building their presence. Fingers crossed we see more of the pure fire introduced to us in ‘New York’ in coming releases because that riff just fucking killed us. Keep em coming riot babies πŸ”₯

Playing in London would be a dream come true, hopefully one day we can make the trip across the pond.
