Amelia from Cigarette Pie on creating community, not dating tories & filthy cute aesthetics 💕

I love the idea of creating a supportive community with like minded others. When you go to a Cigarette Pie event you’re coming out of it with new friends, networking with the other bands, artists, creators etc & just generally widening your place in the scene.

💖 What is a cigarette pie?

I was cleaning out a massive ashtray & I said to my friend that it looked like a cigarette pie & I just liked the sound of it. Kinda fits with the aesthetic as well, something sweet but also revoltingly filthy.

💖 What made you decide to set it up?

I went to a LOT of the same shows over the past 3 years & it got to the point where I was so incredibly bored & frustrated of seeing the same old line ups of 5 straight white dudes thinking they’re gods gift.

Nothing against those musicians like ‘you do you’ & that but after a while when it’s 6 of the same bands on the same bill it gets tiresome.

I also can’t stand novelty nights “specially” made for women… it’s like saying “ok you’re not good or important enough for a normal standard bill so we’ll give you one night a month to showcase your work” – like what?! Fuck you.

But on a positive note I  love the idea of creating a supportive community with like minded others. When you go to a Cigarette Pie event you’re coming out of it with new friends, networking with the other bands, artists, creators etc & just generally widening your place in the scene.

💖 What criteria do you have for choosing bands/line-ups?

Honestly I don’t really have any rules (apart from no dickheads & no tories) 💅

I just research bands & listen to music people send me. I get a fair few emails of people asking to play & the majority have done now.

I’m really open to discovering new genres as well so if you fancy playing just hit me up on Facebook or my email which you can find on the Cigarette Pie page!

💖 What are your plans for growth?

At the moment Cigarette Pie is just a solo project by myself!

I’m not sure if that will change but I’m planning on doing bigger shows across bigger venues & really broadening the brand so we’ll see what happens.

I feel I’ve learnt a lot from the last year doing this but yeah there’s still plenty to learn to progress. Just taking everything one gig at a time for the remainder of 2019, then 2020 there will be exciting shit happening!

💖 What’s the best show you’ve ever put on?

Maybe the first ever one?

The support from everyone was incredible & the response was overwhelming to be honest!

It was actually only ever met to be a 1 off event but after that I just knew it was the start of something really special.

💖 What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened?

Ugh….. anything that involves violence or agg….. Defeats the entire point of what I’m trying to do. Just don’t bring that shit near me.

There’s only one event that’s been that way which I spoke about on the Facebook page… apart from that, everything’s been smooth as fuck.

💖 What’s your advice for other people who want to start putting on shows but haven’t done it before?

Do your research, create your own brand & then just go for it. London needs more promotors that aren’t of the “everyday norm” so to speak.

💖 What 1 thing should everyone be doing to make the scene a better place?

Not missing the early acts!

I understand & respect that people have jobs & sometimes have to travel far but if you CAN make it earlier then you should.

If you’re on the same bill as a bunch of other bands you should be turning up & supporting each other.

Pet peeve when bands turn up for their slot & leave. Not only is it disgustingly rude but also such a massive fuck you to everyone else on the bill.

Also just general respect for each other but at the kind of shows I attend now that’s kinda standard.

💖 Let’s talk graphics because god damn!!! 🔥 Tell me about your aesthetic, what’s it derived from?

I like cute & trashy 90s stuff a lot & also the contrast between the posters compared to the music I put on. It’s another play on the whole cute VS filth vibe.

It’s like a powerpuff girl calling someone a cunt.

💖 Will you give us lessons?

In how to be more Cigarette Pie? Throw some pink glitter or fluff on it & say fuck it.

💖 What’s coming up for you in 2020?

More shows!

Would also love to collab with a few other promotors for something big in the summer… that’s all still under wraps for now though.

2020 is gonna be a fantastic year for music & for future events. Bigger & bigger & bigger until I take over the world!!!!

Next show is at DIY Space for London on January 25th!! https://www.facebook.com/events/2395940757334104/
